A landmark in the timeline of Aston Martin’s performance car story, the V8 Vantage Zagato was created in collaboration with the engineers and craftsmen of Zagato of Milan in Italy, upon the proven chassis and running gear of Aston Martin’s then most powerful model in period, the V8 Vantage ‘X-pack’.
This incomparable example, represents a superb once in a lifetime opportunity, for investors in collectors cars, drivers and enthusiasts of ‘80’s’ supercars, to acquire a rare ( 1 of 50 ) V8 Vantage Zagato, in an ‘as new’ condition, fully prepared and ready to be enjoyed as originally intended, after nearly 40 years of hibernation.
Limited to just 50 production cars and 2 prototypes, the new Vantage Zagato stole the limelight in 1985 at the Geneva Motor Show when first launched, promising extreme performance and distinctive Italian styling. Created in response to the emerging Supercar push by other manufacturers, the V8 Vantage Zagatos performance was favourably compared in various publications, including Autocar and Performance car magazines, when road tested by senior motoring journalists, most frequently in comparison with the legendary Ferrari 288 GTO and with Porsche’s 959 technical tour de force.
The significantly lighter, shorter and re-developed AM V8 Vantage chassis, clothed in Zagato’s light weight and aerodynamic alloy body, is powered by Aston Martin’s highly developed and free revving V8 Vantage ‘X-pack’ specification engine, delivering 432 bhp and 410 ft/lbs torque, as fitted to this model. The V8 Vantage Zagato, was officially timed at 1986 with a top speed of 186 mph and was a ‘sell out’ in period. Equally at home in any urban environment or on the open road, the V8 Vantage Zagato’s performance and practicality remains outstanding today.
With an overall length shorter, by almost 12 inches, than the standard Newport Pagnell bodied V8 Vantage, a significant 10% reduction in weight and redistribution of weighty components, a wind tunnel developed alloy body, fitted with flush glazing and aerodynamic aids to the body and underside, the Vantage Zagato was acclaimed in period for its outstanding performance, predictable handling, progressive road holding, strong braking, communicative steering, ease of use and even for its high level of practicality, not often found in 1980’s supercars.
Now, some 40 years after the model’s introduction, younger collectors, world-wide, have in recent times been drawn to the aesthetics, of the simplicity and functional lines of the Vantage Zagato, as well as for the performance and rarity, of this Aston Martin hi-performance icon.
