The Valkyrie Aston Martin's technical masterpiece

Motoring journalists have finally been allowed behind the wheel of The Valkyrie Aston Martin’s hypercar, the Valkyrie. We take a look at whether the Valkyrie is a ‘leap’ car, alike the Lamborghini Miura, McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron.

About The Aston Martin Valkyrie

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is a limited-production hybrid hypercar collaboratively built by British automobile manufacturers Aston Martin, Red Bull Racing Advanced Technologies and several others. The sports car is a product of collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing to develop a race car entirely usable and enjoyable as a road car, conceived by Adrian Newey, Dr Andy Palmer, Christian Horner and Simon Spoule. The car's makers claim the title of fastest street-legal car in the world for it.

Writer Henry Catchpole takes the Valkyrie for a drive

Motoring journalists have finally been allowed behind the wheel of Aston Martin’s hypercar, the Valkyrie. At Nicholas Mee and the Aston Store, we have spent way too much time reading the various reviews and watching the various videos of some of the worlds finest motoring journalists trying the Valkyrie for the first time, with our favourite being this video starring Henry Catchpole, one of the most talented and considered writers out there. It also happens to have the least advert breaks!

In the video, Henry poses the question as to whether the Valkyrie is a ‘leap’ car, alike the Lamborghini Miura, McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron. Watch the video to find out his verdict!

A closer look at Aston Martin's Valkyrie

The car contains a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine tailored by Cosworth, which produces around 1,000 hp (746 kW; 1,014 PS) at 10,600 rpm, with a redline of 11,100 rpm. This will make it the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine ever to be fitted to a production road car, With a KERS-style boost system akin to those fitted to F1 cars, the Aston Martin Valkyrie's hybrid system has been developed by two main technical partners; Integral Powertrain Ltd, who supplied the bespoke electric motor, and Rimac for the lightweight hybrid battery system.

The Valkyrie's design is based on the Red Bull Advanced Technologies' AM-RB 001 concept car, which was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The car's bodywork is made from carbon fibre, and it features a number of aerodynamic features, including a large front splitter, a rear diffuser, and a pair of active rear winglets. The Valkyrie also has a number of innovative engineering features, including a pushrod suspension system, a carbon fibre monocoque chassis, and a lightweight titanium exhaust system.

Here are some additional facts about the Aston Martin Valkyrie:

  • It is the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine ever to be fitted to a production road car.
  • It has a top speed of over 250 mph.
  • It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds.
  • It has a curb weight of just 1,250 kg.
  • It is the first car to be developed in collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing.
  • It is the first car to be designed by Adrian Newey, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest Formula One engineers of all time.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is a truly remarkable car. It is a technological tour de force, and it is sure to be a collector's item for years to come.
